Maintaining your wooden fence is an important part of getting the most out of it. While low-maintenance solutions such as vinyl, composite and aluminum fences are gaining popularity, wooden fences still look wonderful and perform well at a lower cost. Wood is a natural product that is both durable and powerful. Years of exposure to the elements such as wind, rain, and snow take their toll. However, with proper wood fence maintenance, you can turn back the clock and keep your fence looking as good as new. Below, learn how to maintain your wooden fence so that it can withstand many more winters.
1. Remove mold: Mold is a killer when it comes to wooden objects. This fungus can form on the wooden surface of your fence if there is too much dampness. When mold grows in places on the fence, it begins to penetrate deep into the wood, causing it to deteriorate. Any style of fence can be cleaned with an acidic mixture of white vinegar and water.
2. Remove any rot spots: It's too late to prevent rot if pieces of your wooden fence have already started to rot. Because rot causes your fence to physically come apart, you must address it as soon as possible. The best approach to remove rotted areas with a saw or knife.
3. Repair any loosened pickets: Simply said, if your fence's parts are falling off,  you may reinforce it using a hammer and outdoor nails or with a drill and outdoor wood screws. If any pickets are too damaged to be nailed or screwed back on, then you can remove the damaged picket and replace it with a new one from the hardware store. If it appears that more sections are damaged than are stable, it's time to replace the fence.
4. Keep an eye out for any sharp objects: This fence maintenance suggestion is intended to safeguard your children or pets rather than your fence. Long, pointy splinters can grow on wooden fences as they age. Worse, rusted nails might emerge from connection points depending on how the fence was made. As part of your wooden fence maintenance, remove any of these sharp hazards.
5. Remove fallen leaves from your fence: While falling leaves may appear to be a symbol of autumn, they can speed the disintegration of a wooden fence. When leaf piles build up, moisture is trapped. When moisture penetrates into your fence, mold grows more quickly, especially around the posts. Simply sweep the leaves away from the base of your fence to eliminate a potential hazard.
6. Seal it with a water resistant material: This is one of the most crucial wooden fence care recommendations, and it's also the most time-consuming. Whether you need to do this every year – or a bit less frequently – depends on the type of wood your fence is made of. Pressure-treated lumber does not require it, but it will extend the life of the fence. In any case, sealing your wooden fence is important maintenance advice since it helps the wood to withstand moisture. Any hardware shop will have a great fence sealant. You can also find outdoor stains that have have weatherproofing properties. Some last 6 years and some last as long as 25 years on fences.

Types of Wood Fence Styles
Wood Picket Fencing: Picket fences are a classic fence style that has been popular in the Lexington, SC area and throughout the Midlands for decades. Wood picket fences have traditionally been a low-cost and quickly repaired fencing option, and current wood treatments and finishes make today's wood picket fences a durable and low-maintenance fencing option. Picket fences are typically a high visibility option with pickets spaced 3 inches apart. This spacing also provides for smooth wind flow across the fence. They are ideal for front yards, gardens, and pool fences.
Wood Privacy Fencing & Semi-Privacy Fencing: A privacy fence is constructed with little to no space in between the wooden boards. These are ideal for backyards and pool fences where privacy or semi-privacy is wanted. If wind flow is still wanted, a board-on-board style fence style can be installed where 1x6" boards are set 4 inches apart and 1x4" boards are set on the opposite side filling in the gaps. The extra boards makes this style of fence more attractive on both side and also a bit more expensive. Another option is a semi-private fence where the boards are attached with a small amount of space to allow for air flow. Looking head on, there is some visibility but that disappears when looking at an angle.
Wood Split Rail Fencing: Commonly used for marking property lines, adding a decorative accent to your property, or keeping in livestock and horses, split rail fences also add the charm of country living. This type of fence, also called post and rail fences, can be installed with 2-rails, 3-rails, or 4-rails.
Wood Lattice Fencing: The view is obscured by crisscrossing strips of lath that enable air and light to pass through. Climbing plants will love this screen. Lattice Fences are best used for gardens, decks, patios, and pools, especially where you wish to use climbing plants to assist in increasing privacy.
